Steve Smathers Washington:Mr. Willis Steve Smathers, 54, of Sharon Rd., died Monday at his home. Mr. Smathers was born in Haywood County, NC, anad worked in the automotive industry. He was the husband of Laura Owens Smathers, and was the son of Faye Conard Smathers and of the late Benjamin Franklin Smathers.Steve’s favorite past times were camping, fishing, and hunting. Funeral services will be Wednesday, April 1, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. at Hopkins Funeral Home with Rev. Klay Aspinwall officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday evening from 7-9 at Hopkins Funeral Home.Interment services will be Friday morning, at 11:00 at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park in Waynesville, NC. Mr. Smathers is survived by his wife, Laura O. Smathers, of the home; one son, Richard Steven Smathers, and one daughter, Carrie Nicole Smathers, both of Waynesville, N.C.; two step-sons, Robert Stevens, of Washington, and John Stevens, of Oxford; his mother, Faye Conard Smathers, of Waynesville, NC; one brother, Thomas Earl Smathers, of Waynesville, N.C.; and three grandchildren, Walker Cole Smathers, Emily Jade Thomas and Josi Elizabeth Thomas. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 7-9 at Hopkins Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
