Mr. William Augustus “Sonny” Howard, Jr., 78, entered into rest Saturday evening, September 9, 2023, at his home surrounded by his family.
Sonny was born June 8, 1945 in Washington and had lived here most all of his life. He was the son of the late William A. Howard and Louise Faver Howard, and was the husband of Jan Henderson Howard. He graduated from Washington-Wilkes High School in 1963, then joined the U.S. Air Force (‘63-’67) during the Vietnam War, served in the Dominican Republic, and the rest of his time at Shaw Air Force Base in Sumter, SC. He retired from Rayle EMC on April 1, 1998, after 30 years of service, then drove a truck for H&H Logging Company from 1998 until 2012 before retiring. He was a member of VFW Post 5899 in Washington, and was a member of the Sardis Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Jan H. Howard, of Washington; one son, Morgan Howard, and wife Susan, of Dahlonega; and two grandchildren, Charlotte Anne Howard, and William Wells Howard. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Judith Howard and Billie Jean Howard Smith, and by his brother, Douglas Howard.
A visitation will be held Tuesday, September 12, 2023, from 2:00-3:00 at Hopkins Funeral Home. A private graveside service will follow at Resthaven Cemetery.
