Mr. Thomas L. Garrett, 80, of S. Alexander Ave., died Tuesday evening, October 4, 2016, at Wills Memorial Hospital. Mr. Garrett was born in Washington and had lived here all of his life.He was the widower of Margese Wheatley Garrett, and was the son of the late George M. Garrett and Alice Lee Edwards Garrett.He was the owner/operator of Poss Ace Hardware in Washington, and had been in the hardware business for over 50 years.He enjoyed cattle farming and had been successful at it. He was a member of the Chamber of Commerce and of the Wilkes County Young Farmers..He was a member of the East Wilkes Club, and was a member of the Smyrna United Methodist Church in Washington. He is survived by one daughter, Julia Anne G. Holloway (Barry), of Washington; one brother, Marshall Garrett (Linda), of Washington; two sisters, Georgia LeeFletcher, of Washington, and Mary G. Sheffield, of Daytona Beach, FL; and two granddaughters, Ashlyn Lee Holley, and Alyssa Lorren Holley, both of Washington. Graveside services will be 11:00am Friday, October 7, 2016, at the Smyrna United Methodist Cemetery with Rev, Kevin Madden officiating.Visitation will be Thursday evening from 6-8pm at Hopkins Funeral Home. Active pallbearers will be Jimmy Wheatley, Jack Bentley, Dennis Dehil, Mike Sherrer, Colon Edwards, and Tracy Armour. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Wilkes County Young Farmers and the East Wilkes Club. Memorial contributions may be made to the Smyrna UMC Cemetery Fund or First Baptist Church General Fund.
