Thomas Y. Edwards

Mr. Thomas Young Edwards, 96, formerly of Washington, died Monday, March 6, 2017, at the Georgia War Veterans Home in Milledgeville. Mr. Edwards was born in Crawfordville. He was the son of the late Glynn and Thelma Amanda Fouche’ Edwards. He served in the U.S. infantry in the European Theater during WW II, and received a Bronze Star for bravery while in N. Africa. He then returned to his hometown of Crawfordville.He and his wife, the former Kathryn Nash, moved to Decatur to raise their family.Mr. Edwards was employed by Atlanta Gas Light Company, and worked at several Atlanta sites before he was named Manager of the Swainsboro, GA location, where he worked until he retired after 33 years of service.An active Master Mason and community member both in Atlanta and Swainsboro, he was a member of the Rotary and Lions Club, serving as president of the Southwest DeKalb Lions Club.He also volunteered on various community boards.Mr. Edwards was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Kathryn Nash Edwards, and by four brothers, Lawrence, Glenn, Lee, and Emmett. Mr. Edwards is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry and Jeanie Edwards, of Fayetteville, and Danny and Cheryl Edwards, of Lilburn; granddaughter and husband, Tracie and Jamie Tesh, and their daughter Hannah; two grandsons, Jason Edwards, and wife Cynthia, and Jonathan Edwards and family; two brothers and their wives, Bob and Trudy Edwards, of Watkinsville, and James Roy and Marian Edwards, of Mansfield;two sisters and their husbands, Thelma and Bill Moore, and Myra and Corey Maxwell, both of Washington; and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 3:00pm Friday, March 10, 2017, at Hopkins Funeral Home.Burial will follow at the Washington-Wilkes Memorial Garden. The family will receive friends on Friday at Hopkins Funeral Home from 2:00pm until the time of the service. Memorial contributions may be made to the GA War Veterans Home, ATTN.
