Mr. Thomas William (Bill) Cronic, 84, of S. Alexander Ave., passed away Thursday morning, May 16, 2019, at his home. Mr. Cronic was born March7, 1935, to J.D. and Jessie Huff Cronic in Union Point, GA (Greene County).He attended Union Point High, graduated in 1953, then went to Young Harris College on a basketball scholarship.He then married Martha Wray April 17, 1954, and lived in Athens.He worked for Athens Glass & Mirror until December of 1954. They then moved back to Union Point and bought and operated Cronic’s Grocery and Service for 6 1/2 years.He then sold the store, and returned to Athens as credit manager for North American Credit Corporation. He then moved to Washington on January 1, 1963 to take and operate a State Farm Insurance Agency for 37 1/2 years.Bill was very active in Community affairs. He twice served as President of the Washington Rotary, was twice President of the W/W Chamber of Commerce, and served on the Downtown Development Authority.He was on the Washington Planning Commission, the Payroll Development Authority, and was Vice Chairman of the Wills Memorial Hospital Authority, having served on all boards including Chairman of Finance Committee.He also started and taught the Pairs and Spares Sunday School Class at the First United Methodist Church, where he was a member. While their boys were young, he coached Little League baseball and served on local and district levels of the Boy Scouts.He started a basketball league at the old Washington gymnasium on Monday nights during winter months when the boys were old enough to play along with he and many other older guys. Being with State Farm opened their eyes to the world because he was able to win so many trips to different lands around the world.They enjoyed traveling and and traveled a lot even after retirement in 2000.Motorhoming became a way of life for he and his wife for many years, enjoying traveling and visiting with family and friends. Mr. Cronic is survived by his wife, Martha W. Cronic, of the home; two sons., Dal Thomas Cronic (Margie), of Cocoa Beach, FL,and William Randolph Cronic (Tammy), of Washington; one daughter, Stephanie Joy C. Thurmond (Jack), of Washington; Nine grandchildren, Jade C, Kennedy (Trey), Jenny Crane, Justin Crane, Jesse Dylan Cronic, Zachary Dalton Chronic, Madison Suzanne Cronic and Brandon Leonard, Brooke H. Saggus (Josh), and Brian C. Hardigree (fiance Jesse Echols); and 10 great grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 3:00pm Saturday, May 18, 2019, at the Washington First United Methodist Church with Rev. Thomas G. Hall and Rev. Kevin Madden officiating.The family will receive friends on Saturday for one hour prior to the service (from 2:00pm until 2:50pm) at the church sanctuary.
