Sam Clary Mcgill

Mr. Sam Clary McGill, 84, of Washington, entered into rest on Friday, December 4, 2020, at the Ashton Senior Living Facility in Gainesville, GA. Mr. McGill was born in Lincolnton, was the son of the late Senator Sam P.and Florence Clary McGill, and was the widower of Flora Ann Dunnaway McGill, who passed away just last year. He graduated from Washington-Wilkes High School, played tackle for the Tigers from ‘50-’53, and was a member of Coach Charlie Davidson’s first Tiger football team in1952.He was a graduate of the University of Georgia, where he was a member of the Chi Phi fraternity. He trained and showed Tennessee walking horses and always enjoyed the Annual Tennessee Walking Horse Celebration held in Shelbysville, Tenn. He always had a great love for animals. He and his father, Senator Sam P. McGill were owners and business partners of McGill Truck and Tractor, Inc.He sold the business in 1992 to Mr. Wade Palmer, as it became Palmer’s Equipment.Mr. McGill continued to work there as a salesman until May of 2020.He had a passion for selling farm equipment, as his love for people and storytelling abilities made him a natural salesman. He was a member of the Washington First Baptist Church, and a member of the Friendship Sunday School Class.Mr. McGill served his country in the Army National Guard, and was called up for active duty in ‘60-’61, spending that time at Ft. Meade, Md.He loved his family, and was a loving and dedicated grandfather, always making sure he was at his grandchildren’s important events.He was known and loved by the grandchildren for his love and dedication to them and will be remembered for his unique storytelling abilities. He will be greatly missed by the citizens of Washington-Wilkes and by all who knew him. Mr. McGill was preceded in death by his parents, Senator Sam P. McGill and Mrs. Florence Clary McGill; his wife of many years, Mrs. Flora Ann Dunnaway McGill. He is survived by his sister Mrs. Kathryn McGill Lamar of Augusta; two sons, Sam C. McGill Jr. and wife Dana of Aiken, South Carolina; Peyton R. McGill and wife Angela of Washington; four grandchildren Samuel Peyton McGill II, MaryFrances Elizabeth McGill, Tyler Peyton McGill and wife Hanna and Robert Dunnaway McGill. Graveside memorial services will be Thursday, December 10, 2020, at 2:00pm at Resthaven Cemetery with Rev. W. C. Bentley officiating. The family will receive friends at the cemetery immediately following the service. Memorial contributions may be made to the Washington-Wilkes Animal Shelter, 358 Brown Rd., Washington, GA30673.
