It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Robert Ben Broome, a cherished resident of Washington, Georgia, who departed this life on Tuesday, November 5, 2024, at the age of 95.
Born and raised in Washington, Georgia, on May 3, 1929, Robert was the beloved son of the late Clyde and Mozell Beckworth Broome. He lived a life full of dedication, hard work, and a love for the richness of the outdoors.
Robert served his country with honor in the United States Air Force as an airplane mechanic, a testament to his dedication to service and his meticulous nature. After his honorable service, he returned to his hometown, where he worked as a Planer Mill Supervisor, demonstrating a commitment to his craft and community.
Robert was known for his love of the great outdoors, with deer and turkey hunting being among his favorite pastimes. His stories and experiences from the woods were shared with many, leaving behind memories cherished by all who knew him.
Robert was a revered lifetime member of the VFW Post 5899 in Washington, Georgia, where he actively contributed not only as a member but also as a chaplain for many years. He was a source of comfort and guidance to many, using his role to support his fellow veterans through their journey beyond service.
Robert is survived by his loving daughter, Sherry Beatty, and her husband, Tony, of Jefferson, GA. He is also fondly remembered by his brother, Johnny Broome, and his wife, Rachel, of McCormick, South Carolina; his sisters Amelia Ivey, Mary Harris, Lucy Harris, Reba Howell, and Lulu Howell (Frank) all of Washington; his granddaughter Jennifer Balmert and her husband Gary of Washington, GA; great-granddaughters Kenzie McDuffie and her husband Blake, and Audrey Balmert; and great great-grandson Audie McDuffie and great great-granddaughter McKenzie McDuffie.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Clyde and Mozell Broome, his son Kenneth Broome, and his brothers Hugh, Clyde Jr., Paul, and Carl Broome.
A funeral service to honor Robert's life will be held on Saturday, November 9, 2024, at 11:00 AM at the Washington Presbyterian Church with Rev. Glen Kohlhagen officiating. Following the service, he will be laid to rest at Clifford's Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. Friends and family are invited to gather and celebrate the extraordinary life Robert led.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Hopkins Funeral Home.
Robert Ben Broome will be remembered as a devoted son, a loyal friend, a dedicated worker, a proud veteran, and a man with a profound love of nature. His memory will forever be etched in the history and hearts of Washington, Georgia.
