With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Phyllis H. Marett Hudson, a beloved educator and cherished member of her community. Phyllis passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 17th, 2024, at Piedmont Athens at the age of 76.
Born on Tuesday, October 26th, 1948, in Lavonia, Georgia, Phyllis was the cherished daughter of the late Horace and Mona McCall Hall. Phyllis pursued her passion for biology and education, earning a Master’s degree from the University of Georgia and Tift College. She devoted her career to inspiring young minds, teaching at several esteemed institutions including Washington Wilkes High School, Athens Christian School, and Nathanial Greene Academy. Her influence and guidance left a lasting legacy in the lives of countless students.
A resident of Washington, Georgia, Phyllis was also a devoted member of Ebenezer Baptist Church, where she was known for her faith, kindness, and generosity. Her compassionate spirit and gentle wisdom touched everyone she met, and she will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Phyllis was the cherished wife of Bennie Hudson and the devoted mother to her daughter Alicia Woodham of Blairsville, GA, and her son Jason Marett, along with his wife Karla, of Meansville, Georgia. She was a loving and proud grandmother to Alaina Marett, Andrew Woodham, and Bryant Woodham. Also surviving Phyllis is her sister Nena Fennell and husband Mickey of Gainesville, GA, along with several nieces and nephews, who all held a special place in her heart. Phyllis was also the caring stepmother to Marvin Hudson and wife Sherry of Washington, GA, and John Hudson and wife Jackie of Dallas, TX, and all of their cherished children and grandchildren.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, Horace and Mona Hall, and her first husband, Bobby Walter Marett.
Her legacy will be celebrated during a visitation on Friday, December 20th, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Hopkins Funeral Home Chapel with a service to follow at 1:00 PM on Saturday, December 21, 2024, at Ebenezer Baptist Church with Rev. Paul Wright officiating. Following the service, Phyllis will be laid to rest at Lavonia City Cemetery.
Phyllis will be remembered for her gentle spirit, her dedication to her family and students, and her unwavering faith, which she carried throughout her life. Her contributions to her community and her family will not be forgotten, and she will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
