Parks Smythe Newsome

Mr. Parks Smythe Newsome, 81, died Thursday, March 25, 2010, at Wills Memorial Hospital. Mr. Newsome was a native of Wilkes County, and was the son of the late Andrew Jackson Newsome, Jr. and Flora Anderson Newsome.He was the husband of Jane Rider Newsome, and was the long- time owner and publisher of Washington’s local newspaper, the News Reporter.He served in the U.S. Navy and in the National Guard, and he was a member of the Washington First Baptist Church, where he was a Deacon Emeritus. Funeral services will be Saturday, March 27, 2010, at 3:00 at the Washington First Baptist Church with Rev. Chris Townsend officiating.Burial will follow at Resthaven Cemetery. Mr. Newsome is survived by his wife, Jane R. Newsome, of Washington; one son, P. S. Newsome, Jr., and wife Mary, of Washington; one sister, Beatrice N. Sherrer, of Washington; and three grandchildren, Elizabeth N. Holmes, Daniel J. Newsome, and Molly C. Newsome.
