Mildred L. Hackney

August 24, 1939 — January 1, 2025

Mrs. Mildred Lucas Hackney, a beloved member of the Washington community, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 1st, 2025, at the age of 85. Mildred was born on Thursday, August 24th, 1939, to Cicero and Dicye Hendry Lucas, who preceded her in death.

Mildred lived a life committed to caring for others, dedicating over four decades to the field of nursing. She earned a degree in Nursing from Georgia Baptist College, and later attended Georgia Southern College as part of the inaugural Family Nurse Practitioner's program, graduating in 1981. Over her remarkable 44-year career, she spent 30 fulfilling years as a nurse practitioner at the Wilkes County Health Department, where she made a lasting impact before retiring in 2004.

Known not just for her professional generosity, Mildred had a passion for painting porcelain china, creating beautiful pieces that mirrored her gentle elegance and artistic spirit. Her heart belonged to her family, whom she loved deeply and who warmly hold countless cherished memories. She was a member of the Washington Presbyterian Church.

She is survived by her devoted sons, Jerry Hackney Jr. (Helen) of Washington and Jim Hackney (Christy) of Marietta, GA, along with her daughter-in-law, Shawn Hackney. She leaves behind her brother, Cicero Lucas (Barbara) of Statham, GA, and her sister, Jean Cowart of Powder Springs, GA. Mildred’s legacy continues with her cherished seven grandchildren, Matthew Hackney (Alissa), Adam Hackney, Daniel Hackney (Amber), Alex Hackney (Zoey), Austin Hackney (Sydney), Lauren Hackney, Ansley Hackney and her adored six great-grandchildren, Hannah, Andrew, Collins, Wells, Davis and River Hackney. She follows in eternal rest her late husband, Jerry M. Hackney Sr., with whom she shared 55 wonderful years of marriage, son Jeff Hackney, and beloved sisters Dicye Averette and Linda Hopkins.

Special gratitude goes to Marie Avery Hall for her compassionate care during Mildred’s final years.

Family, friends, and community members are invited to honor Mildred at a visitation scheduled for January 4, 2025, from 2:00 to 3:00 PM, followed by funeral services at 3:00 PM at Hopkins Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Phillips Mill Baptist Church Cemetery, where she will be laid to rest.
