It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Mattie Pearl Godfrey, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. Mattie was born on Thursday, May 18, 1950, in Darlington, South Carolina, and peacefully departed this life on Saturday, April 12, 2025, at the age of 74, in Augusta, Georgia.
Mattie was a beacon of love and kindness to all who knew her. She was a proud graduate of Dickerson High School in Jersey City, NJ, and spent her working years as a dedicated crew member at McDonald's, where she made many lifelong friends.
Mattie is survived by her three loving children: Carolyn Pandora Wilson of Hampton, GA; Joseph Carl Godfrey II and his wife, Latanceia, of San Antonio, TX; and Pamela Marie Godfrey of Washington, GA. She also leaves behind her siblings: Walter Hannah Jr. of Farmers Branch, TX; Vera Wright and her husband James Jr. of Newark, NJ; and Eleanor Vigne and her husband Jefferson of McDonough, GA. Her legacy continues through her seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, who brought immense joy to her life.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Williamson and Ella Mae Wilds-Hannah, her stepfather Walter Hannah Jr., her siblings Melvin Hannah, Michele Hannah, Blanche Hannah, Anthony Hannah, and Patrick Hannah, and her son Nathaniel Morris Jenkins III.
Family and friends are invited to gather in remembrance of Mattie on April 24, 2025, from 1-4 PM at the chapel of Hopkins Funeral Home. This will be a time to celebrate her life, share cherished memories, and offer comfort to one another.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Hopkins Funeral Home, where Mattie's memory will be honored with the dignity and respect she so richly deserves.
Mattie Pearl Godfrey will be deeply missed by all who knew her, but her spirit will live on in the hearts of those she touched. May she rest in eternal peace.
