Margie Haggard Mayes

April 10, 1945 — March 21, 2024

Margie Mae Haggard Mayes entered into rest on the morning of March 21, 2024 at her home with her loving husband of 55 years, Harold, by her side.  She was a native of Treutlen County, being born the third of seven children in Tarrytown, and later moved to Vidalia, Georgia with her parents and siblings.

Margie found the love of her life when she met Harold and they were quickly married in October 1968.  Later they welcomed a son and daughter and made their home in Washington, Georgia in 1975.

She was a jack of all trades specializing in baking, cooking, and sewing.  She worked as a seamstress in factories in her early years.  Later, she worked in the Wilkes County School system as a cook, lunchroom cashier, and lunchroom manager.  She was a substitute at Washington-Wilkes Elementary School where she proudly served the children and loved her coworkers dearly.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Val and Malatha Haggard, brother Larry Haggard, and nephew, Keith Haggard.

She is survived by her husband Harold Mayes; son, Waylon Mayes and wife Cathy of Lincolnton and daughter, Sherry Mayes of Augusta; grandchildren, Macy and Coby Mayes; and great grandchildren, Jaxon and Anneliese Courtright; two brothers, John Haggard of Fitzgerald and Jimmy Haggard (Glenda) of Vidalia, three sisters, Annie Laura Henry of Swainsboro, Minnie Hattaway (Tim) of Vidalia, and Linda Gail Phillips (Woodrow) of Soperton; as well as loving in laws, nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

The funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Sunday, March 24, 2024 in the Chapel of Hopkins Funeral Home.  Interment will follow in Resthaven Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 12 noon until the funeral hour, at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Mt. Zion Church, c/o Wade Dunnaway 335 Grant Drive, Washington, Georgia 30673
