Lena Elizabeth Amis Jackson (Betty) passed away Wednesday evening, August 16, 2023 at Southern Manor Senior Living.
Betty was born in Athens, Ga. on December 24, 1927 to William Dean and Margaret Bell Amis. After completing tenth grade at Athens High she attended the University of Georgia where she got a degree in language and journalism with the intention of becoming a foreign correspondent and interpreter. While at UGA Betty joined the Chi Omega Sorority and eventually met her husband Norman Jackson Jr. of Washington, Ga.. They were married at Emmanuel Episcopal Church of Athens where she had grownup. After moving to Washington she joined the Church of the Mediator where she became a pillar of the church. She headed the Vestry for years as well as the annual church bazzar and taught Sunday school.
Betty stayed active in the community. She was a Boy Scout den mother, a Girl Scout leader, a member of the Iris Garden Club, The Women’s Club, Friends of the Mary Willis Library, N. Alexander School Association, Historical Society and The Little Theatre. She was also a supporter of the Georgia Museum of Art and the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
Betty returned to UGA and got a Masters Degree in Education and became the first Special Education teacher in Wilkes County. Later she taught elementary school at Wilkes Academy. Her real passions were reading, entertaining, and spending time with her three grandchildren.
She was a member of various bridge clubs, book clubs, and supper clubs. Betty had an abundance of wonderful friends.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Norman Jackson Jr., her son, Robert Ragsdale Jackson, and her brother William Dean Amis Jr., all of Washington. She is survived by her daughter, Margaret Henderson (Bernie), three grandchildren; William Z. Henderson, Margaret E. Henderson, and Emily H. Tumlin (Sam), one great grandson; William Z. Henderson Jr., sister in law; Guerry L. Amis, nephew; Lyndon Amis (Leigh Ann) and niece Elizabeth A. Lindsey (Ronny).
Memorial services will be Sunday, August 20, 2023 at 2 p.m. at the Episcopal Church of The Mediator. A private interment will be held at a later time.
