Jonathan Ira "Jon" Smith

June 12, 1947 — February 25, 2024

Jonathan Ira “Jon” Smith, 76, of Tignall GA, passed away peacefully into the arms of his heavenly Father on Sunday, February 25, 2024, at Nancy Hart Nursing Home. Jon was born in Washington GA on June 12, 1947, to the late Charles Marshall Smith and Louise Fanning Brown Smith of Tignall. He is survived by his loving sons, Eric J. Smith (fiancée Jamie) of Santa Maria CA, and Gary A. Smith (Victoria) of San Jose CA; his four beloved grandchildren: Jacob Smith, Hope Smith Ashlock, Samantha Smith, and Justin Smith, all of CA; brothers Charles M. Smith of Sandtown; Morgan E. Smith (Sandra) of Hiawassee; Graham Y. Smith (Glenda) of Snellville; plus numerous dear cousins, nieces and nephews, and many valued friends.

Jon really enjoyed growing up and living in Tignall. His lifelong sentiment was exactly as the Tignall water tank plainly states, “I’d Rather Be in Tignall”. After attending school in both Tignall and Washington, Jon was a loyal truck driver for years. He then became a successful motorcycle and small engine mechanic in Tignall. People would drive distances to have Jon “fix whatever needed fixing”.

Following a horrific car accident in June 2008, Jon suffered traumatic brain injuries that caused him to need special care. Jon became a Christian while he was still in the intensive care unit from the accident. He knew that God had miraculously intervened and spared his life. Jon grew to love God and was always joyful in spite of his circumstances. As long as he could, Jon enjoyed his life. He was greatly loved by many and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Pallbearers are: Henry Brown, Clem Slaton, Marshall Smith, Adam Smith, Danny “Bulldog” Heard, and Richard Heard.
