John Harvey Edwards

Mr. John Harvey Edwards II, 68, of Washington, Georgia,died July 2, 2011 at Trinity Hospital in Augusta, Georgia.Mr. Edwards was born September 26, 1942, in Abbeville, South Carolina to Juanita Rhodes Edwards Riley and the late Mac Williams Edwards Sr. He is preceded in death by his only brother, Mac Williams Edwards Jr. He attended Presbyterian College where he played football then spent the next forty years as a highway contractor.In 1984, he founded Site Prep Inc., a highway construction firm located in Orangeburg, South Carolina and served as its President until just recently. He resided in Orangeburg, South Carolina for thirty years before relocating back to Washington, Georgia in 2006. Mr. Edwards was an avid supporter of Presbyterian College and served on numerous Alumni Boards over the past forty-five years.He was recently recognized to receive the Golden “P” Award, Presbyterian’s highest alumni distinction.He was a lifelong Episcopalian and was a member of the Church of the Mediator in Washington, Georgia and the Church of the Redeemer in Orangeburg, South Carolina.He served on the Vestry of both churches. Survivors, include his wife of forty six years, Laverne Burdette Edwards; one daughter and two sons; Todd and Shannon Edwards Hall of Jacksonville, Florida, Leslie and John Harvey Edwards III of Monroe, North Carolina and Jenny and George Williams Edwards of Matthews, North Carolina; mother, Juanita Riley, of Washington, GA.and six grandchildren, Matthew and Lucas Hall, Anna Claire and John Harvey Edwards IV, and Walker and Jacob Edwards, and two nieces, Elizabeth Edwards of Hendersonville, North Carolina and Ruth Cole of Jacksonville, Florida. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Presbyterian College in the name of the John Harvey Edwards Scholarship Fund, the Church of the Mediator, or the American Cancer Society. A private service for family only will be held at the Church of the Mediator in Washington, Georgia on Tuesday, July 5th at 1pm, followed bya graveside service for all family and friends at Resthaven Cemetery, Washington, GA.Dr. Deni Mossand Dr. John V. Griffith will officiate. George Lokey, J.V. Waters, Buck Echols, Ricky Lindsey, W.E. Burdette III, Harry Mims, Johnny Gresham, and Kenneth Peele will serve as pallbearers. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be nephews, Grier Armour, Dave Castellaw, Henry Harris Jr., Bill Burdette, WE Burdette IV, and friend Ronnie Davis. The family will receive friends following the graveside service at the Edwards’ home located at 1045 Greensboro Rd.
