Janice M. Scott

Janice McAvoy Scott, 75, passed away peacefully at her home on Friday, September 30, 2022 following an extended illness. She was surrounded by her husband, children and grandchildren.

Janice was born on November 19, 1946, in Washington, Georgia. She was the oldest of four children of Walter Pope and Dorothy Poss McAvoy and grew up in the Tyrone community surrounded by a large extended family.

Janice was always active in the community and her church. She was a member of the Pilot Club, Woman’s Club and was a devoted W-W Tigers fan. She retired from Berry Plastics in 2015 after working there for 35 years.

Janice was also a dedicated member of Phillips Mill Baptist Church where she was a member of the WMU and served in countless capacities such as teaching Sunday school, leading Children’s Church and serving as church clerk.

Janice was a wonderful mother and grandmother. She doted on her family and was happiest when her grandchildren surrounded her. She hosted Sunday dinners almost every week until she became unable.

She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Samuel D. Scott, daughter, Karen Chafin and son-in-law David Chafin, son, Greg Scott and daughter-in-law Melisa, grandsons Grant Chafin, Miles Chafin, Levi Scott, Logan Scott, Chase Chafin and granddaughter Kelsie Scott, her sisters, Jean Gunter (Thomas) and Debbie Goldman, her brother Larry McAvoy (Linda), and a host of nieces and nephews, and their families.

The family will receive visitors on Monday from 6:00pm to 8:00pm at Hopkins Funeral Home in Washington.

The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, at 3:00pm, at Phillips Mill Baptist Church in Washington with Reverend Mark Woods officiating.

Interment will follow at Resthaven Cemetery in Washington.

Pallbearers will be Grant Chafin, Miles Chafin, Levi Scott, Logan Scott, Chase Chafin, Jeremy Goldman, Kyle Goldman and Josh Goldman.
