James Clarence Lance, a devoted servant of faith and a cherished member of his community, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 4th, 2025, at the age of 83. He lived at Royal Oaks Retirement Community and spent his final days at Regency Park Health in Dalton, GA, surrounded by love and care.
Born on Saturday, November 29th, 1941, in Washington, Georgia, Clarence was the beloved son of the late Boyce P. Lance and Sara Lance, who preceded him in death. Throughout his life, Clarence embodied the values instilled in him from his family and his unwavering faith.
A graduate of Washington Wilkes High School in 1959, Clarence pursued higher education with a passion. He earned both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Agriculture from the University of Georgia, followed by a Ph.D. in Soil Chemistry and Plant Nutrition from the University of Auburn. His academic accomplishments led him on a distinguished 20-year career with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, where he contributed invaluable research in soil science.
Clarence’s faith was a cornerstone of his life. A dedicated member of the First Baptist Church in Fort Oglethorpe, GA, he was ordained as a minister in 1996, living out his calling through service as a Southern Baptist Missionary. His devotion to his faith was evident in his active involvement with the church community, leaving a legacy that touched many.
He is survived by his loving wife, Barbara Lynne Jones Lance, with whom he celebrated a remarkable 60 years of marriage this past December. Their union was one of love, partnership, and unwavering support. Clarence is also survived by his brother, Willard Harvey Lance of Washington, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews who will fondly remember him for his warmth and wisdom.
Clarence was preceded in death by his parents, Boyce P. Lance and Sara Bell Lance, as well as his brothers Boyce, Chris, Guy, and John Lance and his sister, Sara Lance Dees. The memory of their shared laughter and love will continue to cherish in the hearts of those who knew them.
Friends and family are invited to attend the graveside services on Monday, February 10th, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Cliffords Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, with Reverend Chris Townsend officiating.
