Iris Brookins Corbett, age 101, of Evans, Georgia, formerly of Washington, Ga. passed on Sept. 29, 2016. Born in Baldwin County Georgia on Feb. 26, 1915 she was the daughter of Louis Augustus Brookins and Fannie Mae Stubbs Brookins.She was proceeded in death by her husband of 62 years, Felton Corbett Sr., five brothers and two sisters.A graduate of Georgia State College for Women, Milledgeville, Ga., Mrs. Corbett taught in Deepstep, Ga. before marriage.She and Felton Corbett married on Feb. 25, 1937.An interesting fact about their marriage was that Felton Corbett’s birthday was Feb. 24, their marriage was on Feb. 25 and her birthday was Feb. 26. This fact was one reason for family reunions and celebrations. The Corbett family moved to Washington, Ga. in 1950, where they joined the First Methodist Church.Mrs. Corbett, an active member of the church, frequently taught Bible study classes.Felton and Iris were also members of the Booker Garrard chapter of the Eastern Star where they served in many positions including Worthy Matron and Worthy Patron. Mrs. Corbett was an accomplished gardener and seamstress. She raised prize winning roses while fighting a never ending war with the deer over possession of the roses. Survivors include four children, Virginia Nelms (Claude) of Lavonia, Ga., Ellen Averill (George) of Cataula, Ga., Felton Corbett Jr. (Alice) of Magnolia, Tx. and Marcia Hopkins (Truman) of Evans, Ga. a sister, Laurie Calvert, eight grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. During her lifetime, Mrs. Corbett experienced major societal changes including women earning the right to vote, gaining acceptance as men’s equals, and earning acceptance in leadership positions in society and business. She witnessed the Apollo moon landings, sixteen presidential administrations, major advances in medicine, the Great Depression, World War II, the Cold War, the collapse of the Soviet Union. She was part of a vanishing era. Throughout all the changes in every aspect of our society, she remained steadfast in her belief in God and service to her church.She was appreciated and loved by all who knew her and will be greatly missed. Graveside services will be 3:00pm Wednesday, October 5, 2016, at Resthaven Cemetery with Rev. Thomas Hall officiating.Grandsons will serve as pallbearers: Keith A. Nelms, David Nelms, John Averill, Felton Corbett III, Truman Hopkins III, and John Hopkins.There will be an hour of visitation from 1;00- 2:00pm at Hopkins Funeral Home on Wednesday- just prior to the graveside service.
