Howard Lee James

February 22, 1919 — October 23, 2016

Mr. Howard Lee James, 97, of the Greensboro Rd., died Sunday, October 23, 2016, at his home. Mr. James was born in Corinth, MS, and was the son of the late Jobe Bell James and Margaret Johnson James. He was the husband of Dell McAvoy James, was a member of the Bethel United Methodist Church, and was preceded in death by a son, Lawrence James. Mr. James was an Army Veteran, and while serving in the Army’s 4th Infantry Division, landed on D-Day and participated in the D-Day Invasion.He was in the first wave of the Allied Invasion of Normandy on Utah Beach.He fought in the Battle of the Bulge, and fought until the surrender in Berlin. Mr. James is survived by his wife, Dell McAvoy James, of the home; two sons, Ronnie James, of Washington, and Victor James, of Appling; two daughters Charlotte J. Bullard (Drew), of Appling, and Susan Pilgrim (Larron), of Thomson; three granddaughters, Shannon Scott (Joey), Savannah James (Rod), and Bryanna Johnson (Jeremy); one grandson, Ash James (Jessica); and 5 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be 3:00pm Tuesday, October 25, 2016, at the Bethel United Methodist Church, with Rev. Larron Pilgrim and Rev. Richard Broom officiating.The family will receive friends Tuesday at the church (Bethel UMC) from 2:00pm until the time of the service. Memorial contributions may be made to the Augusta Chapter of the Wounded Warriors, or to Gideons International. Hopkins Funeral Home is in charge of Arrangements.
