Herbert Lee Smith age 84 of Washington, Georgia passed away August 7, 2012 at his home surrounded by family. He was born March 3, 1928 to the late Gid Lee and Vivian Louise Johnson Smith of Lithonia, Georgia. He was a graduate of Lithonia High School and Georgia State University. He served in the United States Navy from 1945 to 1949. He was a devoted, loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, LaVerne Irvin Smith and their five children; Mrs Patricia Lynne & Tim Jackson of Covington, Georgia; Ms. Teresa Leigh Satterfield of Lexington, Georgia; Mr. Herbert Kenneth & Katy Smith of Eatonton, Georgia; Mrs. Patsy LaVerne & Billy Cates of Social Circle, Georgia; Mr. Herschel Theodore & Elizabeth Smith of Washington, Georgia; Sixteen grandchildren and nine great grandchildren; two sisters Mrs. Jo & Jerry Shaw of Stone Mountain, Georgia and Mrs. Carolyn and James Britt of Clarksville, Georgia. He is preceded in death by one brother Doyle Lewis Smith. He was a residential developer, builder, realtor and broker in Dekalb County for 30 years. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Washington, Georgia. He was ordained as a Baptist Deacon in 1977 at Avondale First Baptist Church in Decatur, Georgia. He taught Sunday School in Dekalb and Washington Georgia for many years. He was a Master Mason and Yaarab Shriner for more than 50 years. He served as a member of the LaFayette Lodge in Washington, Washington Shrine Club, and served in Atlanta Georgia. He was a past president of the Rotary Club in Wilkes, County, a member of the Cattleman’s Association and Agricultural Business Council. Visitation will be Thursday, August 9 from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm.at the funeral home. The funeral will be held Friday, August 10 at 11:00 am at the First Baptist Church of Washington, 105 W. Roberts Toombs Ave. Washington, Ga. 30673 with a graveside service to follow at Washington-Wilkes Memorial Gardens, Athens Highway, Washington, Ga.
