Helen Granade Woodbury

Helen Granade Woodbury passed away peacefully April 20,2013.Helen was born May 22, 1923 to Samuel Welcome Granade and Annie Cofer Granade in Washington, GA.She was valedictorian of her graduating class at Washington High School.Afterreceiving an associate degree in education from G.S.C.W., Helen began her teaching career in Dalton, GA.She was a life-long teacher and learner.She returned to college and was graduated from the University of Georgia with a B.S.Ed. Helen remembered being in Athens on V-J Day during World War II.She later received a Masters of Education in Counseling and Psychological Services from Georgia State University.She worked many years for the Georgia Department of Labor. Helen loved to travel.She had lived in Greece and all over the United States making life-long friends world-wide.She maintained her memberships in the Baptist Church wherever she lived and was a member of the First Baptist Church-Avondale Estates for over forty years.There she met her husband, Taliaferro Woodbury. Her stepchildren have said, “Our family has been so richly blessed with “Mama Helen” in our lives not only a mother but at times a psychiatrist-advisor-listener-and maybe a true psychic.Most of all she loved us unconditionally.Helen was the “Super Glue” that has kept this family together for the past 30 years.Such a short time to do such a tremendous job.There will surely be a void in our lives forever.” Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Julian Taliaferro Woodbury, noted classical architect and best known for his works at the University of Georgia and Berry College in Rome, Ga.She is survived by her stepchildren Gail Woodbury Campbell (Dr. Vic Campbell) of Greer, SC, Julian Taliaferro Woodbury II (Mrs. Brenda Woodbury) of Asheville, NC, John Robert Woodbury of Hilton Head Island, SC, and Jane Woodbury Thornton (Mr. Michael Thornton) of Memphis, TN.” Helen was an active member of Kettle Creek Chapter, of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Rhododendron Club, Rowland Hills Garden Club and other community and service organizations.She was a resident of Park Springs Community in Stone Mountain and her beloved farm home-place in Wilkes County. Survivors in addition to her step-children are her cousins Mrs. Vivian Wickersham, Brantley Callaway, Mrs. Alice Crenshaw, Mr. Charles Granade, Dr. James A. Granade, Jr. Mrs. Nancy Granade, Snell, Ms. Bette Bridges, and Mr. Duffy Cofer. Graveside services will be Monday, April 22, 2013 at 11am in Resthaven Cemetery, Washington, GA. with the Reverend Tommy Lankford and the Reverend David Thornton, her grandson officiating.The pallbearers will be Dr. James A. Granade III, Jonathan R. Granade, Ed Walker, Andrew Crenshaw, John Crenshaw, and Sam Chrenshaw. A Celebration of Helen Woodbury’s life will be held May 5, 2013 at 2:00pm in First Baptist Church-Avondale Estates. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to First Baptist Church-Avondale Estates, 47 Covington Rd., Avondale Estates, Ga. 30002 or Berry College, Rome, Ga.
