Gwendolynn K. Snider, lovingly known as GiGi, was a cherished educator and devoted traveler. She passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 8th, 2024 at Piedmont Athens Regional Hospital in Athens, Georgia, just shy of her 82nd birthday. Born in Houston, Texas on December 17th, 1942, Gwendolynn’s journey through life was marked by her dedication to education, her love for travel and her vibrant spirit.
Gwendolynn earned her PhD from New York University, which spurred a lifelong passion for teaching. Her career as a schoolteacher touched the lives of countless students, instilling in them a love for learning and a curiosity about the world.
An ardent traveler, Gwendolynn embraced the wonders of the world, exploring the cultural riches of Australia, New Zealand, China, Scotland, Europe, France, Greece and many others. Her stories and memories from these adventures were cherished by her family and friends.
Gwendolynn and her husband, Leroy Snider, moved to Washington, Georgia two years ago, a new chapter in a life defined by new adventures and experiences. Gwendolynn was an active member of the Washington Wilkes Book Club, where she shared her love for literature and fostered a community of avid readers and thinkers.
She is survived by her devoted husband, Leroy, and her stepsons, Fredrick (Shannon) Snider of Harlem, Georgia and Christopher (Shana) Snider of Anderson, South Carolina. Gwendolynn was a proud grandmother to Lisa Snider, Sierra Snider, and Savannah (Jack) Castellanos, each of whom she adored. Her life and legacy also touched her cousins, John and Ann Flanigan of Houston, Texas. She was predeceased by her parents, AP and Verne McDonald, and her sister, Cynthia Bush, whom she dearly missed.
A private memorial service will be held to honor Gwendolynn's incredible life, allowing those closest to her to gather and celebrate her memory intimately. Gwendolynn K. Snider will be remembered not only for her accomplishments and contributions, but for the love she shared and the inspiration she provided to everyone who knew her. She will be deeply missed.
