Frankie Lenair Phillips, 76, of Washington, Georgia, went to live with his Lord and Savior, on Thursday, October 22, 2015, while at University Hospital in Augusta GA with his family by his side. Frankie was born on January 10, 1939, in Estill SC, to the late Monroe and Maggie Phillips. He graduated from Estill High School. He entered the US Navy at the age of 17 as an E-1 and achieved the rank of Limited Duty Officer (LDO) LCDR before retiring from the military, after 30 years, in 1986. During his Navy career, he served in the following commands: RTC Bainbridge MD, NAVCOMMSTA Cam Rahn Bay Vietnam, USS Kenneth D. Bailey DD-173, Officer in DOC Newport RI, NAVCOMMSTA Puerto Rico, Iceland, Diego Garcia, and Philippines, NAVSTA Charleston SC, USS Mt. Whitney LCC-20, OIC NTCC Charleston, NAVAIRFAC Lajes Azores, NAS Port Lyautey Morocco, and Assault Craft Unit 2 in Little Creek VA. Following his military career, he was a member of the Lions Club in Brunson SC, and then was employed in Talladega AL by WEWN Catholic Radio, where he remained for approximately 7 years as Vice- President of Operations. Since 2006, he has resided in Washington GA, with his wife Mary Ruth, after moving from Alabama to be closer to family. Frankie was a devoted member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church where he sang in the choir. He enjoyed caring for his 3 cats, 3 dogs, many chickens, and “his” herd of wild deer. He was proceeded in death by his mother and father, and is survived and will be deeply missed by his wife, Mary Ruth;two sons, Vincent Phillips(Laura)of Appling GA and Vance Phillips (Deirdra) of Grovetown GA; one daughter, Indie Charlene Smith(Scott) of Varnville SC; one adopted son, Rick Gray(Denita) of Milan IN; two sisters, Lillian Johnson and Belva Wilson; two brothers, Donnie Phillips(Wendy) and Jack Phillips(Lynne); seven grandchildren, Brandon Phillips, Kyle Phillips, Joshua Phillips(Kim), Brittany Pendroza (Emilio), Indie Marie Smith, Corey Smith, and Cale Phillips; and three great-grandchildren, Layla and Violet Phillips (twins), and Roy Pendroza. Visitation services will be held at Hopkins Funeral Home, Washington GA, on Friday,October 23, 2015, from 6:00-8:00 pm with funeral and interment services following atNixville Church of God of Prophecy in Estill SC, on Saturday, October 24, 2015, at 2:00 pm. If so desired, memorial contributions can be made to the Wounded Warrior Project in lieu of flowers.
