Dennis Edward Palmer, Sr.

January 17, 1933 — June 27, 2022

Mr. Dennis Edward Palmer, Sr., 89, of Barksdale Dr. in Washington, entered into rest Monday, June 27, 2022, at Doctors Hospital in Augusta.

Mr. Palmer was born in Elbert County and had lived in Washington for the last 52 years.  He was the son of the late Willie Fleming Palmer and Nancy Dixon Palmer.  He earned a Bachelors Degree in Forestry from the University of Georgia, and retired after a long career as a forester.  Dennis was a founding member of the Georgia Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation, served as its first president, and continued to serve on the Board of Directors for 32 years.  He served in the Army National Guard, and was a member of the Washington First Baptist Church.

Mr. Palmer is survived by his wife of 67 years, Julia Thigpen Palmer, of Washington; one son, Dennis Edward “Eddie” Palmer,  Jr., (Tracy), of Americus; three daughters, Julia Elizabeth “Beth” Guin (John), of Danburg, Carol Ann Palmer, of Harlem, and Dona Elaine Palmer Hornung (Jeff), of Evans; nine grandchildren, Rylee Palmer Knight (Adrian), Baylee Kate Palmer, Jessica Lynn Nale (Shaun), James Christopher Ward (Rachel),Heather Dianne Cottingham (Andrew), Alisha Brooke Shivers, Raleigh Elizabeth Hornung, Jeffrey Alan “Jake” Hornung, Jr., and David Alexander “Alex” Sellers; and five great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Saturday, July 2, 2022, at 2:30 p.m. at the Washington First Baptist Church with Dr. Phil Pilgrim officiating. The family will be receiving friends in the church sanctuary on Saturday from 1:00 until the time of the service (2:30 p.m.).  Active pallbearers will be James Ward, Alex Sellers, Jake Hornung, Shaun Nale, Andrew Cottingham, Andy Taylor, Adrian Knight, and John Sisson.  Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Friendship Sunday School Class at First Baptist Church.

The family respectfully requests that memorial contributions be made to the Washington First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 603, Washington, Ga. 30673, or to the charity of your choice.
