Ms. Betty Jean “Peggy” Bonner Echols, 90, of the Lexington Rd. in Rayle, entered into rest Tuesday morning, January 17, 2023, at the Echols Personal Care Home in Rayle.
Ms. Echols was born in Oglethorpe, Co., and had lived in Wilkes County for most of her life. She was the daughter of James Alexander Bonner and Addie Chafin Bonner. She was twice widowed, first by Lawrence Adams, then later by Harold Echols. She was a retired Postmaster for the Rayle Post Office, and was a member of the National Asssociation of Retired Postmasters. She was a member of Sardis Baptist Church, loved helping cook at Sardis for shut-ins, and had always been deeply involved in Bible School there. You know how there are those people that are always called upon when something needs to be done? Well, that was Betty Echols. But she loved to serve and loved staying active. Betty will be greatly missed. She was preceded in death by a son, Johnny Alexander Adams, and by her sister, Sybil Bonner Hayes.
She is survived by her son, William H. “Bill” Remsen, and wife Hope, of Martinez; and by one granddaughter, Delaney Remsen, of Augusta.
Memorial services will be at 3:00pm Friday, January 20, 2023, at the Sardis Baptist Church in Rayle with Rev. Jim Newsome officiating. The family will receive friends Friday at the church for one hour prior to the service (2:00-3:00pm).
Memorial contributions may be made to the Sardis Baptist Church in her memory.
Hopkins Funeral Home is honored to serve the family of Betty Jean (Peggy) Echols.
