Mrs. Bernadene “Bernie”Voorhees Pope, 84, died Wednesday morning, January 4, 2012,at Wills Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Pope was born in Harvey, IL, and was tha daughter of the late Edward and Bernadene Zombro Voorhees. She was the widower of former Mayor Edward B. Pope, Sr. She was a teacher and started her career teaching at Reinhardt University. She then taught first grade for a number of years in Rome, GA,and later in life worked as a home economist for the University of Georgia Extension Service. She was a University of Georgia graduate, and while there played the French horn in the Red Coat Marching Band.She was a member of the Washington Church of the Mediator and a member of the DAR. She was also a member of the PEO and of the Washington Garden Club, and was very actively involved in the Wills Memorial Hospital Auxillary. Her interests included dancing and golfing and she enjoyed being involved in landscape design. Memorial services will be Saturday, January 7, 2012, at 11:00am at the Washington Church of the Mediator with Rev. DeniMossofficiating. Mrs. Pope is survived by herson,John H. Cook III, of Alpharetta;her daughter, CherylV. Coston, of St. Augustine Beach, FL; three grandchildren, John Cook IV, Natalie Cook, and Amelia Cook; two step sons, Edward B. Pope, Jr. and wife Susan, of Washington, and Pembroke Pope and wife Sandra, of Washington; and one step daughter, Charlotte Pope Simmons, also of Washington.
