Betty Louise Burt Berry, 92, of Centerville Rd, Rayle GA, left this world for her heavenly home on October 15th, 2024. She passed peacefully at home, just as she wished, surrounded by the family that she loved so dearly. She was a native of Oglethorpe County, born in the midst of the Great Depression on March 31st, 1932. She was the last of 4 children born to the late Curtis Lee Burt and Zillah Lonie Patton Burt.
Betty spent much of her youth in the Enterprise community of Oglethorpe County. She often recounted her experiences growing up on a small country farm, before such amenities as electricity and indoor plumbing were common place in rural areas. She graduated from Oglethorpe County High School in 1949 and entered the work force holding such jobs as a secretary (Oglethorpe BOE), a lunch counter server (Kress' in Athens, GA), a seamstress (the Royal, Washington, GA), and a US postal worker (Rayle and Washington, GA). She retired from the Postal Service in February of 1994 after 20 years of service.
On April, 22, 1955, Betty married Bradley Eugene Berry, a young Wilkes Countian whom she met on a blind double-date arranged by mutual friends. They were married at the home of the justice of peace, with only two friends to witness. After living briefly in Washington, GA, Betty and Bradley made their permanent home in Rayle, GA. It was here that they raised their two children and spoiled their grandchildren. They remained married for 42 years, only being parted by Bradley's death in 1997.
Betty was a kind-hearted, staunchly independant woman, who loved her family fiercely. She was loved by many and will be greatly missed.
In addition to her parents and husband, Betty was preceeded in death by her son, Rev. Donnie Berry; her sister, Sybil Vaughn; her brother, Ledelle Burt; an infant brother, Thomas Quillan Burt; and great great grandson, Jonathan Hosting.
Family left to cherish Betty's memory include: Sandra (daughter) and Tom Parker & Kris Berry (wife of Donnie) of Rayle GA; Jessica (granddaughter) and Derrick Cofer, of Colbert, GA; Lee (grandson) and Kim Parker & Josh (grandson) and Sam Parker of Rayle, GA; Abbie (granddaughter) and Joey Pruitt of Lexington, GA;
Tristan (great grandson) and Maggie Hosting; Lila (great granddaughter) and Aaron Dills; Bradley Parker (great grandson); Kylie and Lindsey Pruitt & Hallie Parker (great granddaughters); Noah and DJ Pruitt (great grandsons); Tad Dills & Alejandro Hosting (great great grandsons); numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and honorary grandchildren.
Funeral services will take place on Thursday, October 17th, 2024 at 3:00pm in the Hopkins Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Kenny Long and Rev. Jim Newsome officiating. Interment will follow at the Rock United Methodist Church Cemetery in Rayle.
Active pallbearers will be Lee Parker, Josh Parker, Joey Pruitt, Derrick Cofer, Bradley Parker and Aaron Dills. Tristan Hosting will serve as an honorary pall bearer. The family will receive friends prior to the service at 2:00pm at Hopkins Funeral Home.
Memorial contributions can be made to Samaritans Purse and the American Heart Association.
